THE WOMAN CALLED TYPHOID MARY

Typhoid fever is a common disease caused by a bacterium called Salmonella Typhi that lives in the intestine and blood.
It originated from an Irish American cook in the United States named Mary Mallone.
She was a cook for the affluent families and an asymptomatic carrier of the typhoid disease.
She spread the disease across many families which led to several deaths from the illness which necessitated her quarantinement .
She was later called Typhoid Mary.

Typhoid fever is a very common disease spread by eating food or drinking water contaminated with faeces of an infected person ,that is, food sold by foodsellers along the roads and close to the gutter and toilet.
It is transmitted from human to human and not animal borne.
Risk factors include poor hygiene and sanitation.
The bacteria causing typhoid enters through the mouth, travel to the intestine, to the bloodstream and then spread to tissues.
The signs and symptoms begin a month after exposure which include high fever up to 40 degrees Celsius, weakness, abdominal pain, headaches, constipation, vomiting, diarrhoea and in some cases skin rash particularly on the neck and abdomen.
It is detected in blood and stool culture and with a widal test.

    1. Thanks victor. No, boiling water for 1min isn’t an absolute rule but it should be at least a min. You can boil longer than that. Again, high heat is preferable to kill the bacteria and render inactive
