GASTROENTERITIS (stomach flu/infectious diarrhoea )




Gastroenteritis, also called stomach flu or infectious diarrhoea is an infection of the gastrointestinal tract mainly the stomach and small intestine.

It is mainly caused by viruses I. E rotavirus in children.
however, could be caused by bacteria, parasites and fungus.

Very common in developing countries.

Signs and symptoms include fever, vomiting, abdominal pain, headaches, fatigue, muscle pain, bloody stool/dysentery, diarrhoea, dehydration.

Transmitted through eating improperly cooked food, drinking contaminated water or close contact with one who is infected.

Preventive measures include,

Hand washing with soap after using the toilet.

Drinking clean water.

Stop eating at foodstands and roadside vendors.

Proper disposal of wastes.

Breastfeeding of babies instead of using formula.

Rotavirus vaccination is encouraged in children.

Oral Rehydration salts (ORS)/ Salt sugar solution whenever you have symptoms.
