EPILEPSY" A SOCIAL STIGMA"
Epilepsy is a disorder in the nerves located in the brain leading to seizures and convulsions.
A seizure or convulsion is a sudden, involuntary, rapid jerking movement of one part or the whole of the body due to disturbed electrical activity in the brain.
These seizures could be brief or last for a long time.
Many sustain physical injuries including broken bones due to the violent nature of the disease.
People with epilepsy are treated differently and experience social stigma because of their condition.
They are often depressed, isolated and have learning disabilities in school.
Common in Nigeria ( >100,000 cases per year)
60% of cases, the cause is unknown.
Could be a genetic/acquired cause.
Causes include brain trauma, stroke, brain tumor, infections in the brain eg meningitis, encephalitis, malaria, toxic ingestion eg alcohol and poisons.
Signs and symptoms include jerking of the muscles of the head, arms, hands, legs and feet or all over the body.
Smacking of the lips and biting.
Loss of consciousness before or after.
Cry.
Blue skin if the respiratory muscles are involved.
Loss of bowel and bladder control.
After convulsion, there is a recovery period- headache, confusion, weakness and abnormal behaviour.
Triggers include flashing light, sudden noise, stress, high peaked emotions.
Diagnosis- electroencephalogram (EEG) to detect brain activity., CT scan/MRI to detect brain tumors, infections in the brain.
Prevention of seizure attacks
1. Reduce risk factors viz head injuries, good care of baby after birth, treat infections when present, reduce BP to prevent stroke, reduce intake of alcohol,
2. High fat and protein diet, reduce carbohydrates
3. Reduce exposure to triggers- flashing light, sudden noise, stress, emotions.
4. Exercise regularly
5 call a dr for appropriate treatment and management.

WE CAN PREVENT HYPERTENSION!!!
HYPERTENSION
WHAT IS HYPERTENSION?
Hypertension is also known as high blood pressure.
To be specific, an elevated blood pressure of 130 over 90 mmHg and above, measured on three separate occasions 1-2mins apart.
Since we know what hypertension is now, what then is blood pressure?
Blood pressure is the force exerted by the blood against the walls of blood vessels that run in our body.
1.5 MILLION CASES PER YEAR IN NIGERIA
Risk factors include -family history, older age, male gender, black race, lack of
Physical activity, unhealthy diet including salt, sugar, high calorie diet, weight gain, excessive alcohol intake, high cholesterol, smoking and most importantly stress.
Hypertension is usually referred to as a "SILENT KILLER", meaning it is rarely accompanied by symptoms. But in some cases, it could start with headaches especially at the back of the head and very early in the morning, light headed ness, visual disturbances, fainting episodes.
HOW TO PREVENT HYPERTENSION
Check your blood pressure on a regular basis using a sphygmanometer eithier mercury in glass or the portable analog which can be used at home at your convenience.
Lifestyle modifications- reduce intake of fatty food, salt, spices, sugar, high calorie diet.
Water therapy-taking at least 1 glass of water especially in the morning and at night before going to bed everyday
Exercise- jogging around your home for 30mins at least three times in a week, aerobic exercises to keep your heart rate up.
Limit alcohol intake
Quit smoking.
Liberal intake of fruits and vegetables
Reduction of stress in your lives- BE HAPPY and try to get enough rest and sleep.
See a doctor if your blood pressure is above 130 over 90 mmHg.
When hypertension remains untreated, it can lead to a heart attack, stroke, blindness, failed kidneys, and death eventually.
PLEASE LET'S PREVENT HYPERTENSION. THANKS. DR TM
